2.5/5 Life Partners Life Partners, Susanna Fogel’s charming, but slight new film about two friends who could not be more different, is utterly watchable and charming for days. At the end of the day, though, it does not amount up to much. Sasha (Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl) is a lesbian at a crossroads with her music career that seems to have stalled. Paige (Community's Gillian Jacobs) is a straight environmental lawyer - let’s count the number of twenty-something movie characters who are environment lawyers - who wants nothing more than to hang out with Sasha and all her lesbian friends, of which includes the always welcome Gabourey Sidibe (Precious, American Horror Story)... That is, until Paige goes on a blind date with Tim (Adam Brody) and she actually kind of likes him. You can basically write the rest of the plot for me from this point. Tim unsurprisingly sticks a wedge in between the two friends and causes a series of spats. Though there are no surprises form here on out, Fogel has a way of staging scenes that result in the max amount of laughs. The screenplay, by Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz, is ripe with witty banter and the fact that Sasha’s sexuality is nothing more than an understood side-note is refreshing. This film is not on a mission to make any kind of statement; it is simply telling a human story about two friends. I could have lived with the lack of surprises in the plot department, but the film comes short of having any real revelations besides Sasha finally realizing that she needs to be a bit more responsible. So, for a charming ninety-five minutes of easy laughs, Life Partners is your way to go. However, you may want to keep looking if you are hankering for something that digs a little deeper.
